1972 brought the Wood Brothers their third Daytona 500 victory.
After coming off a disappointing 1971 Daytona 500 finish (a race that the Wood Brothers and A.J. Foyt would have won had they not run out of gas), the Woods and A.J. joined forces again to make a run at the 1972 Daytona 500.
There was no shortage of confidence heading into the race as A.J. confidently predicted that he would take the Wood’s #21 Purolator Mercury to victory lane.
The race started with Bobby Isaac on the pole. A.J. had to fight race traffic and force his way to the front. Foyt eventually caught NASCAR legend Richard Petty and it appeared that the winner of the race would be decided between the two. However, this battle was short lived as Petty’s car had trouble and he was forced to retire to the garage.
Once Petty was out of the race it was clear sailing for A.J. Foyt won the race by almost two laps beating Charlie Glotzbach by the largest margin of victory in Daytona 500 history.
