Qualifying canceled at Pocono: Rain at Long Pond, PA caused the qualifying for the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500 at Pocono Raceway to be canceled and the field was set by the NASCAR Rules book: Top 35 in owners points, past winner as owner [#09], then the remaining seven cars by race attempts. Since there are only 43 cars at the track, no drivers/teams will go home this week. It is the fifth time in 2009 that qualifying has been rained out. Another rain out

Stewart crashes; goes to back-up

LONG POND, Pa. - Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson led Saturday’s first NASCAR Sprint Cup practice at Pocono Raceway but Tony Stewart was the story.

The two-time series champion crashed his Stewart-Haas Racing Chevrolet on his second lap around the track and will go to a backup car for Sunday’s Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500.

“I screwed up,” Stewart said of the wreck, which will also force him to start from the rear of the field. “I got in too deep and got loose and couldn't save it."

Stewart, coincidentally, was also relegated to the rear following a crash in practice at Pocono when the series visited the 2.5-mile facility in June. He was able to rally and win that event, however.

Could the SHR co-owner/driver do the same again this weekend?

Stewart has made just two previous starts in this backup car – at Auto Club Speedway in February and at Darlington in May – and finished seventh and third, respectively.

"I know we can do it,” Stewart said of coming from the back on Sunday. “I tore up a really good race car today."

Johnson, who ran a fast lap of 167.292 mph, was followed in speed by Richard Childress Racing’s Clint Bowyer (166.334) and Roush Fenway Racing’s Carl Edwards (165.911).

Hendrick’s Jeff Gordon and RCR’s Kevin Harvick completed the top five, followed by Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, Richard Petty Motorsports’ Kasey Kahne, JGR’s Denny Hamlin, Penske Racing’s Kurt Busch and Hendrick’s Mark Martin.

A final one-hour practice begins at 11:20 a.m. EDT.
