Fall racing at Charlotte Motor Speedway has come a long way since the inaugural fall race on October 16, 1960. The Wood Brothers won the first fall Charlotte race with Speedy Thompson behind the wheel of the #21 Ford. (Pictured are Driver Speedy Thompson and Owner Glen Wood in Victory Lane)

This will be the Wood Brothers 100th start on the 1.5 mile quad-oval having compiled a record of 6 wins, 24 top fives, 38 top tens and 20 poles. Driver Bill Elliott has competed in 59 races at the famed speedway earning 2 wins, 11 top fives, 22 top tens and 4 poles.

During this year’s spring race, the #21 team started tenth and finished 15th and began a run of strong performances that to date has resulted in 7 top 20 starts and 5 top twenty finishes. The team is looking forward to building on the successes of its intermediate track performances this weekend during the “NASCAR Banking 500 only from Bank of America.”

The #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion will be sporting a special “Warriors in Pink” paint scheme in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. Bill Elliott will be wearing a “Warriors in Pink” fire suit and helmet that will be available through an online auction - all proceeds benefiting “Susan G. Komen for the Cure.”

The teams take to the track on Thursday for practice and qualifying. Two practices are scheduled for Friday with race action scheduled for Saturday night at 7:25 pm.
I hope they have a great weekend!!!!!!

I believe that was their worst qualifying effort all season... really disappointing after the great runs they've been having.

Nevertheless, they're in the show, and that's what matters.

i just read this:

Quote :
After a ran shortened practice and having to make the race on time, the #21 team had to run a conservative qualifying lap. Despite the less aggressive approach, Bill still picked up two tenths of a second over his best practice time running a lap of 28.77 seconds. The time was good enough to make the race and start 36th. The teams will be back on the track tomorrow for two practices.

make of it what you will, maybe the car is not good with cold conditions scratch

edit-
Quote :
BILL ELLIOTT -- No. 21 Warriors in Pink Ford Fusion (Qualified 36th)

"We struggled from the time we started and we just never hit on anything. The bad thing is just the way practice got all messed up and then we were all messed up. We changed a lot of things right before qualifying and we just never started out decently for whatever reason. It just compounded our problem all the way up to qualifying. I'm just glad we got it in the show. There are a lot of heavy hitters here tonight and those are the things you have to fight. You just have to keep digging and go from there, but this is a tough deal."

The Wood Brothers were proud to support the “Warriors in Pink Powered by Ford” effort, Breast Cancer Awareness Month and “Susan G. Komen for the Cure” this weekend in Charlotte. The #21 Motorcraft Ford Fusion sported the “Warriors in Pink Powered by Ford” logo and paint scheme and driver Bill Elliott and the team wore “Warriors in Pink” logos.

In addition to raising awareness for the breast cancer programs, the Wood Brothers hosted Motorcraft / Quick Lane NHRA Funny Car driver Bob Tasca, III. It was his first experience at a NASCAR event and Len and Eddie Wood enjoyed showing him around the track.

As for racing, the team overcame a number of hurdles and brought home a 29th place finish. Instead of resting on the recent improvements in the Wood Brother’s race program, Crew Chief David Hyder and the 21 Team were looking for more this weekend. Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t cooperate. Planning on a full hour and a half for practice on Thursday before qualifying, more than enough time to try a new set-up and revert to the old set-up if the new one didn’t work, the rainy weather shortened the first practice to forty minutes. When the car didn’t respond the way the team hoped, they were forced to implement a known set-up for qualifying. Driver Bill Elliott qualified the car 36th.

On Saturday, the #21 Ford Fusion took the green flag under brisk conditions before a crowd of over 100,000 people. After a few laps, Bill radioed that the car felt loose. Crew Chief David Hyder responded that the car would perform better on longer runs. Unfortunately, there were numerous cautions early in the race and the 21 went a lap down on lap 96.

On lap 119 the caution flag flew again and the team made the decision not to pit - instead taking a “wave-around” in the hopes of pitting under another caution. Unfortunately, the plan did not work out and the leaders passed the #21 again putting the team two laps down. From that point, Bill maintained his position and finished the race in 29th place.

Co-owner Eddie Wood noted, “We were happy to support the ‘Warriors in Pink Powered by Ford’ effort and it was great having Bob [Tasca] at the track with us – he’s a great guy. We got a little behind this weekend trying to improve our car. The guys put forth a great effort and I really appreciate their never-quit attitude.”
