Richard Petty Motorsports confirmed Tuesday that it will swap the crews of AJ Allmendinger and Reed Sorenson beginning with the Carfax 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race this weekend at Michigan International Speedway.
Allmendinger, who will now work with crew chief Mike Shiplett and Shiplett’s crew, is 24th in the Sprint Cup standings while Sorenson is 29th. Sorenson will begin working with Sammy Johns and his crew, which had previously been paired with Allmendinger.
Shiplett and Allmendinger worked together during the tire test last week at Dover International Speedway.
“I’m pumped about working with Mike and his crew again,” Allmendinger said in a news release previewing the Michigan race. “We went testing at Dover last week and worked real well together.
“Sammy Johns and those guys did a heck of a job getting us ready to go racing right before the season and we had some really good runs. They are going to go over with Reed, and we’ll pool the information and improve our teams.
"We’re here to win and get a jump on 2010. Mike and I want to work on everything that will make us a contender the rest of the season and hit the ground running in Daytona in February.”
Johns was a former competition director at the organization who has gotten back atop the box this year as a crew chief.
“We kind of look at it as a fresh start,” Sorenson said. “Sammy has a ton of experience and a lot of knowledge that I hope to use. We have 14 races left and a lot of work to do. This team can run really well and we’d like to show that this weekend in Michigan.”
