Kate & Carl Edwards expecting new addition

CONCORD, N.C. - Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards will soon welcome a new addition to his family.

Edwards announced on Thursday at Lowe’s Motor Speedway that he and his wife, Kate, are expecting their first child – a baby girl – in mid-February.

“We’ve had fun with it, and Kate’s really excited,” Edwards said. “She’s telling people [about the pregnancy] because she could tell people were kind of looking at her like, ‘Damn, girl, you’re putting on some weight.’

“She’s really happy, and I’m happy too. It’s great.”

The couple, who became friends in their hometown of Columbia, Mo., were married on Jan. 3.

“It’s crazy,” Edwards said of the pregnancy. “You guys that have children know this. But we went in there for the ultrasound, the first one, and I’d seen all the pictures [of] what the baby was supposed to look like, and I was sitting there and all of a sudden it started moving, and I almost passed out. It was just wild.”

The 30-year-old Edwards reflected on his thoughts as he and his wife learned the gender of their first child.

“Figuring out the gender thing, we had a little bit of fun with that,” said Edwards, who is eighth in NASCAR’s Chase For The Sprint Cup. “It was taking long enough [to figure out the gender]. I was hoping it wasn’t a boy, but that was pretty exciting.”

The February due date means the baby could arrive around the time of Speedweeks 2010 at Daytona International Speedway.

“Perfect timing,” Edwards quipped to a room full of laughing reporters. “We’ll car her ‘Daytona.’”

Edwards says he and his wife, a physician, actually haven’t decided on a name yet.

“I don’t know what we’re going to name her,” he said. “It depends on the timing, I guess, or how Daytona goes.”
