- The future of racing at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve has been solidified for the next three years as International Speedway Corp. has signed a three-year deal to operate the track for major motorsports events.
ISC had partnered with local promoter/track operator Normand Legault to form Stock-Car Montreal and promote the Nationwide Series event at the city-owned Parc Jean-Drapeau the last two years. ISC has since bought out Legault’s stake in Stock-Car Montreal, and ISC then had to sign a contract with the city-owned park to promote the events held there, ISC spokesman Lenny Santiago said Monday. Legault’s contract had allowed him to promote two major motorsports events a year, and that included a Formula One race. That race is not on this year’s schedule, and Santiago said that ISC is focused on the Nationwide Series/Grand-Am weekend, and he said ISC plans that the Nationwide Series will compete there for at least the next three years. "This is the best thing that could happen for Montreal's racing future,” Legault said in a statement. “I've promoted races with ISC for a few years - they have an excellent reputation and sincerely wish to develop a long lasting relationship with Montreal and its thousands of race fans."
Tickets are now being sold for this year's Nationwide event, which will occur Aug. 30 on an off weekend for the Sprint Cup Series. Last year’s race was the first for a NASCAR national touring series on rain tires and was won by Canadian Ron Fellows. "We are thrilled with today's announcement and our team looks forward to hosting this unique motorsports event for years to come," said François Dumontier of Stock-Car Montreal. "With the experience we've gained over the last two years, the on-track performances of Canadian drivers such as Ron Fellows and Patrick Carpentier and the growing popularity of NASCAR in our province, we are confident this third edition will be a resounding success.” | |
